Bear guard tour

Shiretoko is said to have the highest brown bear population density in the world. Encounters with brown bears occur not only while hiking but also frequently while cycling. Amid a succession of bear attacks across Japan, an incident in which a mountain climber was attacked by a brown bear also occurred in Shiretoko in 2025.

We have launched a service for those passing through Shiretoko while touring, or those planning to cycle around Shiretoko on their own bikes, in response to requests such as “I would like a guide to accompany me for safety.”This is a private (chartered) tour in which you decide the route to ride, and a guide accompanies you by bicycle while managing safety. We can accommodate groups of up to 6 people.

The assigned guide has received training in brown bear response and conducts guided tours in Shiretoko while encountering brown bears 20–30 times a year, so they are well accustomed to handling brown bear situations. While it is not possible to prevent brown bear attacks with 100% certainty, the risk can be significantly reduced.
